Everett Raymond Kinstler
Everett Raymond Kinstler, a native New Yorker, began his career at 16 illustrating comic books and hundreds of magazine and paperback covers during the golden age of comics. His early work for titles like The Shadow and Doc Savage left a lasting influence on the pop art movement. He studied at the Art Students League and later taught there from 1969 to 1974 before transitioning into portraiture, where he gained national acclaim.
Kinstler went on to paint more than 500 portraits, including those of five U.S. Presidents—Nixon, Ford, Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and Clinton—along with the official White House portraits of Ford and Reagan. His subjects also include icons such as Katharine Hepburn, Paul Newman, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Arthur Miller, as well as business leaders, governors, cabinet members, and university presidents.
A recipient of honorary doctorates from Rollins College and Lyme Academy of Art, Kinstler's work is held in major institutions including the National Portrait Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Brooklyn Museum. He received the Copley Medal from the Smithsonian in 1999 and the Portrait Society of America’s Gold Medal in 2001. A PBS documentary has chronicled his remarkable career.
